Opening stage of employment tribunal fee refund scheme launched
As we know, back in July 2017 the Supreme Court confirmed that the fee regime in the employment tribunal was unlawful and quashed it with immediate effect. As a consequence of this, the government confirmed that those who had paid tribunal fees would be reimbursed. Last Friday’s announcement signals the beginning of the refund process and will see up to 1,000 individuals being contacted and given the opportunity to apply for refunds. These individuals will also be entitled to recover interest of 0.5% on the fees they have paid. The government has estimated that the total cost of providing eligible individuals with refunds will be in the region of £33 million. A rather embarrassing and costly U-turn for the government.
