A NEW masterplan has been released for the ‘Medieval Quarter’ of Manchester (see page bottom) which introduces a comprehensive and seemingly sensible greening of the area. The Medieval Quarter is from Hanging Ditch to Victoria Station and bordered on the west by the River Irwell, although the landscaping will take in both sides of the river.
Plans are afoot to have the Irwell, which wends its lazy way through Manchester’s City Centre and into Salford, celebrated.Manchester has long been void of the green and recreational areas that seem to litter British cities, which is something identified by Manchester City Council several years ago. I will not re-hash the ‘news’ that Manchester is making waves on the development scene – that particular refrain has had enough limelight. I would, however, highlight that it is a very heartening sign of a confident economy that money can be set aside for schemes such as this.The cost of the building works will not be the only consideration; a scheme such as this will have a hefty maintenance bill to go with it. These plans are solidly in infancy, but I look forward to the future plans the Council are willing to endorse with great anticipation.
